Cree Woman. Canadian Woman. Warrior Woman.
My name is Kamamak, or Mackenzie in English. As a young girl I was taught about balance. The balance between traditional and contemporary. This is how I live my life – with a moccasin in both worlds.
I have a strong and traditional Cree heritage, yet I live in the bustling and modern city of Mohkinstsis, Calgary. I drum and sing the songs of my Indigenous people while infusing contemporary sounds and words. I paint ancient spirit animals using modern, vibrant colors. I teach the traditions of my Cree people with an approachable, urban spin.
I create contemporary Indigenous art, teach Cree cultural lessons throughout Alberta, and facilitate discussions throughout all levels of government and academia.
Wichewin! Come with me! Let me take you on a journey, dancing in the in-between, celebrating culture, the heartbeat of mother earth and the stories of the land.
